Kevin & Patrick O’Driscoll, Lameroo
In the first two months of 2011, Patrick O’Driscoll and his father Kevin, have seen 6 ½ inches of rain fall at their property north of Lameroo, which currently runs 1,400 merino ewes and a core group of Southrose Suffolk rams.
These form the basis of the O’Driscolls first-cross breeding program which in 2010 produced 1,350 lambs. Half of these made it to market, but the other half are enjoying the abundance of feed while Patrick bides his time on a rising fat lamb price.
The combination of a Southrose suffolk ram over a merino ewe has delivered the O’Driscoll’s greater fertility and better mothering which has resulted in a consistent lambing percentage of 100-110% which is on track for their eventual goal of 125%.
"I’m consistently happy with the performance of the rams each year. And knowing that the Ashby’s run both merinos and suffolks makes me confident they understand what I’m looking for."
Despite a long term relationship with Letts and now Southrose, Patrick openly admits to considering the competition.
But, it is the consistency and the known performance of the Southrose rams that has him a regular feature at the sale each year.
